April 10, 2025

Painted for the Art as Poetry exhibition at the
Rahr-West Art Museum
by the Lakeshore Artists Guild

The poem is a reference to a young artist who doesn't have the vocabulary to explain what they are seeing, trying to explain a piece of art with the limited vocabulary they have.

"A Wood Turned Bowl"

by James Iverson

Whoa!
Check out that big bron bowl!
I heard some dude carved it from a tree!
You heard me,
A god damned tree!
It's big
but not as big as the tree the dude carved it from.
It sure is big though!
and brown
very brown
and big!
The dude must be some kind of wood working genius.
He's big too!
but not brown
I bet he spends all winter holed up in a basement just carving away
and growing ghostly white
making sure that bowl tells the story of that tree
and his story too.
